Ever since the first two World Wars, the military jacket has slowly edged its way into mainstream popular fashion. This jacket was made even more popular in fashion during the late 60s and early 70s hippie movements, where military protesters would commonly don these jackets to show their discontent with the United States military presence in Vietnam. Slowly but surely, these jackets made their way over to the fashion world of the present day. This traversing did also bring along quite a few twists and turns on the style. You see, the standard army jacket is not the only popular style of military jacket; there are other popular styles, too. Naturally, knowing what styles are hot right now can go a long way in helping you decide which jacket that you want to purchase the next time you find yourself shopping for one.
Made an instant classic in certain popular films like “Top Gun,” and injected into popular culture decades prior to that major motion picture in classic war films, the aviator jacket is, perhaps, one of the most popular styles that you can choose. Also called a bomber jacket or a flight jacket, these jackets were originally designed to keep pilots and their crews warm during cold weather flight missions. Today, they are a popular fashion staple and feature thick leather, large zippers, multiple pockets and wrapped colors for a very distinct look.
The classic military cargo jacket really became the most popular during and following the Vietnam War. Originally worn by war veterans and protestors alike domestically, its unique cargo couture quickly became a popular fashion adage for people in the U.S. and abroad. At first, this military jacket was only really available in military surplus and wholesale stores. However, due to its continued popularity stint, it’s now been copied by major garment makers around the world, and now is available in a variety of popular men’s and women’s styles.
You know this military jacket style best from the iconic 80s king of pop, Michael Jackson. That’s because this was the very jacket that he wore during many entertaining sets on stage and countless world tours. This signature cropped jacket was actually worn by soldiers during the 19th-century, and features brass and gold colors, fancy buttons, epaulets, braiding and beading for a unique and signature look. It typically comes in one of two colors: black or navy blue. The most popular style is the navy blue one.
Before they were adopted by United States sailors, the pea jackets were made popular by sailors across the pond in Europe. They were actually called “P-jackets” at first, named after the “pij” cloth from which they were fashioned. Later on, “pea” would be adopted to replace this name. They can be longer or shorter jackets that are generally not very thick yet are known for their warmth. Modern versions are made using a variety of fabrics and mediums, and not just pij. This jacket more resembles a long overcoat that you would typically see on the East Coast during winter.
